The Evolution of Spectafy

Spectafy 2.0 is coming soon in the form of the all new Spark app brought to you by the same familiar team at Spectafy Labs.

We owe a huge thank you to all of our fans in the Spectafy app – we really hope you all check out Spark. We’re super excited to be launching soon in April and to be going worldwide right away!

Spark is, similar to the Spectafy app, all about connecting with what’s happening around you. It’s a simple social network centered around following what’s happening near you right now. Unlike how the Spectafy app required a question and answer from two different users to post at a location, Spark makes sharing what’s happening where you are much easier and (we think) more fun!

Thanks for all the support along the way! More coming soon on the Spark blog.

Big Things Happening at Spectafy – Announcing 2.0

We would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of our early users for being an integral part of the Spectafy community. Feedback from early users has lead to some big changes, and we want to keep you involved as we move forward.  We’re very excited about our direction, and we think you will be, too.

At Spectafy, our goal is to create the best possible platform for connecting you with what’s happening around you in real time. This week, we made the tough decision to move away from questions and answers, and towards something we hope will provide easier access to the content the community is looking for.

We want Spectafy to be your go-to app for  exploring and sharing all of the coolest things happening around you.

Most importantly, we want to build version 2.0 for you.  We want your feedback on features, design, content, and more.  We’ll be sending updates on our progress, asking for your feedback over the next several weeks as we prepare for a re-launch that will make the new and improved Spectafy available everywhere!

Do you want a better way to discover what’s happening in your neighborhood and city? Shoot me an email at – I’d love to hear from you!

Thank you so much for being a part of the amazing community, and we look forward to building Spectafy 2.0 with you.

-Spectafy Team

We are insanely excited to be launching Spectafy to the public in San Francisco!! If you’re in San Francisco join the Spectafy community to check out your favorite bar before you go or hunt down your favorite food truck in SoMa. If you’re somewhere else in the world explore what the Golden Gate Bridge or Union Square look like right now!

The Beta passcode block is removed from both our iOS and Android apps. Plus, we have added a ton of new features (especially iOS – coming soon to Android) including adding Google log in.

Thanks to all of our awesome Beta users – the app wouldn’t be 1% as cool and on target if it wasn’t for all of your candid feedback. Please keep telling us what you think @Spectafy or at!

The Art and Science of the Long Hold

The long hold is half art and half science. This puts it in the same very special category as the three finger track pad swipe and the basketball finger roll.

With that said, it’s actually really easy and intuitive once you get the hang of it. To a lot of us it’s already completely normal to do on our phones thanks to selecting locations in Google maps, copy/pasting in text editors, and many more apps. But – it’s an acquired action and not 100% intuitive. So, let’s jump into how it works and why we care so much about the long hold!

In both the Android and iOS Spectafy apps we take advantage of the long hold in the map to select a location anywhere. Once a location is selected a request is created so you can see what’s happening there! (more…)

The New Era of Ground Truthing is Crowdsourced

Crowdsourcing is the process by which the power of the many can be leveraged to accomplish feats that were once the province of a specialized few.
-Jeff Howe

We are aerospace guys at heart. We see a huge opportunity for crowdsourcing to improve a big part of Earth remote sensing: ground truthing.

Meet Ground Truthing

Through crowdsourcing, satellite and aerial imagery providers have cost effective access to many, many more data points, all over the world.

Ground truthing is the process of comparing data collected on the ground to data collected using remote sensing techniques (typically collected by aircraft or satellite) in order to improve the accuracy of the remotely sensed data. This is done both early in a new sensor’s life in order to calibrate its measurements, as well as when anomalies are detected in order to determine if the sensed anomaly true in real life or an issue with the sensed data.

Enter “exact agriculture” as an example… (more…)
