As promised, here is our next installment of the Best San Francisco Events You Don’t Want to Miss! We love San Francisco and the bay area. That’s why we live here, work here and are launching in SF first! Our goal is to help you be in the know about cool events, and for us all to be more social and involved in the community.
Here are our favorite events in the greater San Francisco area for October, 2014. See you out there!
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival
Who on earth doesn’t want to check out 100+ lives bands on 7 stages for FREE? Get to Golden Gate Park October 3rd through 5th for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. If listening to Poor Man’s Whiskey, drinking beer, and enjoying the park on a sunny day sounds nice, don’t miss this one! I’ll be the one in the cowboy hat…
Sumo Champions Exhibition
Head out to the Japantown Peace Plaza on Sunday, October 5th to enjoy the third annual Sumo Champions Exhibition! This free event will be going on from 11 am to 5 pm. A variety of professional Sumo wrestlers will be in attendance, including freaking Yama, the heaviest Japanese person known in existence at 6’4″ and a whopping 600 pounds! Along with a meet and greet, there will be three live matches at 12, 2 and 4 pm.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been to one of these before so I can’t fully vouch for it – but it sounds awesome!
This killer event runs from October 8th to the 13th. There are a variety of events and shows daily, and the particular locations of each varies. Highlights of the air show include the Blue Angels and The Patriots Jet Team. A variety of old school planes and aerial acrobatics will also be in the cards. There will also be gobs of live band performances and fireworks shows, as well as a parade of Navy ships on Friday, October 11th, and ship tours available throughout the week.
Catch all the details here. This is one of the biggest annual SF events that you don’t want to miss.
5th Annual Union Street Wine Walk
Union Street sponsors two annual wine walks, with this years fall walk scheduled for October 9, 2014 from 4-8 pm. Local and regional wineries will be there, pouring tastes of their fare and sharing information about their operations and wines. If you love wine, this is the event for you! A fun evening of tasting great wine while exploring the always interesting Union Street and the many great shops and restaurants that call it home.
If you are anything like us, plan on catching a Lyft home after probably one too many glasses (read: bottles) of wine.
Leap’s 31st Annual Sand Castle Competition
Ever wanted to see a giant steak made out of sand?? Head over to the 31st annual Leap Sand Castle Competition on October 11th. This years theme? “Food, Glorious Food”. This event began in 1983 at Aquatic Park, but quickly became the largest sandcastle event in Northern California. It now takes place at Ocean Beach, and thousands of spectators are anticipated. In 2013, this event raised over a quarter of a million dollars, which goes directly to improving liberal arts education in local schools. A very fun event for a great cause!
Jerry Seinfeld in Oakland
Take a quick trip to Oakland on Friday, October 17th and enjoy the comedic genius of Jerry Seinfeld live on stage. This one is at the Paramount Theatre at 2025 Broadway. This is too good to pass up, with Seinfeld being one of the greatest television shows of our generation, and my personal favorite. See you there!
Treasure Island Music Festival
a hipster someone who loves live music, and a good time in general, head to Treasure Island on October 18th and 19th for the Treasure Island Music Festival. Hip music, less crowded, and more music-centric than the ever popular Outside Lands, this event is sure to be a blast. If you get tired of Outkast and The New Pornographers, head over to the 60-foot ferris wheel and enjoy incredible views of the City and the bay. A shuttle is available to get you to the Island from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
Possible October Bonus: Giants games!
Home games depend on how the game goes tonight against the Pirates at 5 pm in the NL Wildcard Game (Go Giants!). Assuming a win, you may have a chance to attend a Giants playoff game at AT&T Park. What more can you ask for in fall? Head over to our favorite, 21st Amendment Brewery at 563 2nd Street before the game for some great beers, then take in the madness that is playoff baseball while chowing down on some Gilroy Garlic Fries.
That’s a Wrap. These are the events we’re looking forward to the most in San Francisco in October!
