Our Favorite Events in San Francisco – December 2014

It’s December. You can tell because you had to loosen your belt a notch or two after all that Thanksgiving pie. You can also tell because that crisp winter air is starting to roll in and the temperature starts to feel strangely the same whether it’s day or night. What better time to get out and explore your City? Here are some ideas for fun events in December!

San Francisco Ballet Company Presents the Nutcracker

One of the longest running traditions of the Christmas season, the Nutcracker is always good entertainment. Enjoy a performance at the War Memorial Opera House between December 12 and December 29th. The San Francisco Ballet Company has been performing the Nutcracker for 70 years now, and don’t be surprised if these shows still sell out!

49ers Home Games

As long as the Niners keep playing home games, we will keep suggesting them! They are worth the drive! In December, you can catch your team Saturday, December 20th as they take on the Chargers, or Sunday, December 28th against the Cardinals. Both are 1:30 games….don’t forget the arrive approximately 5 hours early to enjoy some pre-game beer chugging festivities. If you don’t want to head down south – check out just about any sports bar for an awesome time.  THIS JUST IN: The Chargers game has been flexed to a Prime Time spot, and is now a 5:25 game.

SantaCon 2014

On Saturday, December 13th, get dressed up as Santa and take to the streets! This is a worldwide event, and details aren’t released until just days before the event, so keep tabs on the official site . Nevertheless, this is always a great time! We’ve done this one before and we’ll be there again! A citywide pub crawl with thousands of Santa lookalikes couldn’t possibly go wrong.

Live Music, December Edition

If you want to hoof it to Oracle, Fleetwood Mac is playing on December 3rd. If you long for the 90’s, you should probably go see The Smashing Pumpkins December 11th at the Warfield. Billy Corgan is a bit of an alternative mainstay. If neither of those sound enticing, perhaps we will see you at The Regency Ballroom on December 18th for Say Anything and Saves the Day!

85th Annual Tree Lighting at Golden Gate Park

Want to see an extremely large Christmas tree? Head out to McClaren Lodge (501 Stanyan Street) on Thursday, December 4th to see one get illuminated! There will be live entertainment, and apparently even a big ‘ol patch of snow if you want to hone your sledding skills. The festivities begin about 4pm.

Hit the Rink

Where else on earth can you enjoy outdoor ice skating on a lovely 60 degree day in December? Head on out to Union Square and bring or rent some ice skates and show off your figure skating prowess (or join me in spending half your time on your butt). Times vary by day, and admission is $11 for adults and $7 for kids under 8.

New Years Eve Celebrations

Where to begin!? There are so many options, check out this site for some ideas. The fireworks show at the Embarcadero is always a good one. They go off at midnight, and the rowdy crowds are almost always both very friendly and festive. There are also a variety of New Years Eve cruises, where you can enjoy fireworks in the distance while drinking out on the bay. The Speakesy Cruise sounds amazing, although I’ll admit we haven’t done it. It sells out pretty quickly, but tickets are still available as I’m writing this. Blackjack tables, DJ’s, and FOUR HOURS OF OPEN BAR!

See you next month.  If we’ve missed anything good or you have a suggestion for a can’t miss January event, let us know!
